Benzene (C₆H₆) is a colourless, highly flammable liquid with a sweet, aromatic odour. It is classified as a volatile organic compound (VOC) and is widely recognised as a human carcinogen. Benzene evaporates into the air and is primarily a risk through inhalation.
Benzene is found naturally in crude oil and is a natural component of gasoline. It is also released during volcanic activity and forest fires. In industrial settings, benzene is produced during petroleum refining and chemical manufacturing processes.

The UltraRAE 3000+ uses photoionisation detector (PID) technology with a high-energy UV lamp to identify very low concentrations of VOCs in real time.
