FAQs
A fixed gas detector is fixed to the wall and continuously monitors hazardous gases in a certain area. Fixed gas detectors are designed to provide ongoing protection in areas such as chemical plants, oil refineries, wastewater facilities, and confined spaces. They can detect toxic gases, combustible gases, and oxygen levels, triggering alarms or alerting control systems when gas levels exceed set limits.
Common gases include hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O₂), flammable gases such as methane and propane, ammonia (NH₃), chlorine (Cl₂), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The main difference is that fixed gas detectors are permanently installed to continuously monitor an area, while portable gas detectors are wearable devices used to detect gases within the breathing zone. Fixed detectors are for ongoing hazard monitoring in high risk areas, such as industrial plants, tanks, or confined spaces, and can be linked to control panels. Portable detectors are more flexible and used for spot checks or temporary monitoring but do not provide continuous area wide protection.
Fixed gas detectors require regular maintenance and calibration to ensure they provide accurate readings. Most manufacturers recommend calibration every six to twelve months, depending on usage, the type of gas monitored, and environmental conditions. Routine bump testing or functional checks should be carried out periodically to confirm the detectors are responding correctly to gas exposure.
Rockall Safety have a range of service plans available for fixed gas detector customers, contact us for more information.
Yes, fixed gas detectors used in hazardous areas should be ATEX or IECEx certified. These certifications indicate that the detector is safe for use in explosive atmospheres, such as oil and gas production sites, chemical plants, and other high-risk environments. Yes, most fixed gas detectors and flame detectors can be integrated with building management systems, fire alarms, and emergency shutdown systems. This is important for large industrial sites, where early detection and coordinated response can prevent accidents and minimise downtime.
A flame detector is a specialised fixed detector designed to sense the presence of flames. Flame detectors use optical sensors to detect ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), or a combination of both emissions from flames. They are installed in oil and gas facilities, chemical plants, and industrial sites where fire hazards are high.
A control panel is the central hub for monitoring and managing multiple fixed gas detectors. The control panel receives signals from gas detectors, displays real time readings, logs events, and can trigger alarms, ventilation systems, or emergency shutdowns.
