FAQs
Gas detectors monitor and identify hazardous gases in the workplace, such as flammable, toxic, or oxygen-deficient atmospheres. It protects workers from injuries, explosions, and long term health issues.
Gas detectors can identify combustible gases (like methane), toxic gases (like hydrogen sulfide or carbon monoxide), and oxygen levels. PID detectors can also monitor volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Portable detectors are wearable devices that monitor gas exposure in real time for individuals. Fixed gas detectors are installed in specific locations to monitor gas levels in a specific area.
Gas detectors use sensors to identify gas concentrations in the air. Common sensor types include electrochemical, catalytic bead, infrared (IR), and photoionisation detectors (PID).
Gas detectors should be bump tested before each use to ensure the sensors respond correctly, and a full calibration should be every 6 to 12 months. Check the full calibration intervals with Rockall Safety as all manufacturers are different.
Single gas detectors monitor one specific gas, ideal for focused protection. Multi gas detectors can measure several gases simultaneously, such as oxygen, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and combustible gases.
Placement depends on the type of gas being monitored. For example, flammable gases often rise, so detectors are placed near the ceiling, while heavier gases are monitored closer to the floor. Watch this video for more information on fixed gas detection placement: Positioning fixed gas detectors
Accuracy can be influenced by sensor type, environmental conditions (temperature, humidity), exposure to contaminants, and lack of calibration. Regular maintenance and correct usage help ensure reliable readings.
