R11 Gas Detectors

Trichlorofluoromethane, commonly known as R11, is a chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) refrigerant that was widely used throughout the twentieth century. It is a colourless, non-flammable gas with a faint, sweet odour and has the chemical formula CCl₃F. R11 was particularly valued for its stability and thermodynamic properties, making it suitable for low-pressure refrigeration systems, especially large centrifugal chillers.

R11 was most commonly found in large commercial and industrial air conditioning systems, including those in hospitals, universities, office buildings and manufacturing facilities. It was especially popular in centrifugal chillers due to its low-pressure characteristics. R11 was widely used as a blowing agent in the production of polyurethane insulation foams. It can still be present today in older building insulation materials.
