2,2-Dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane, commonly known as R123, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant gas that has been widely used as a replacement for older CFCs like R11 in large commercial and industrial air conditioning systems. It is a colourless, non-flammable gas with a mild ether-like odour and the chemical formula C₂HCl₂F₃.
R123 is most commonly found in centrifugal chillers, particularly in large commercial buildings, hospitals, and industrial facilities. It has also been used in some refrigeration applications and as a blowing agent for foam insulation, although its primary use is in air conditioning and refrigeration systems where R11 was previously employed.
