R143A, or 1,1,1-Trifluoroethane, is a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant widely used in industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems. It is a colourless gas with the chemical formula C₂H₃F₃ and is primarily valued as a replacement for older CFCs and HCFCs that harm the ozone layer.
R143A is mainly used as a blending component in refrigerant mixtures, rather than in pure form. It can be found in industrial chillers, large-scale air conditioning systems, and sometimes in heat pumps or foam-blowing applications. While it is non-flammable under standard conditions, it must be handled with care, as inhaling high concentrations can displace oxygen and pose an asphyxiation risk.
