R22, also known as Chlorodifluoromethane, is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant that was widely used in air conditioning, refrigeration, and heat pump systems for many decades. Its chemical formula is CHClF₂, and it is a colourless gas under standard conditions.
R22 was popular because of its good thermodynamic properties, making it efficient for cooling, and because it was relatively non-flammable under normal conditions. However, it is an ozone depleting substance (ODP ≈ 0.05), which has led to its phase-out under the Montreal Protocol and strict regulations in many countries.
