The FL500-H2 UV/IR Flame Detector is a specialist flame detection solution designed for environments where hydrogen is present. Designed to deliver rapid and reliable fire detection, it uses a dual ultraviolet and infrared sensing technology to identify the unique radiation signature produced by hydrogen flames. By combining fast response with advanced false alarm immunity, the FL500-H2 provides dependable protection in high-risk industrial applications.

The MSA FL500-H2 UV/IR Flame Detector features a wide 125° conical field of view, allowing for broad area coverage and reduced detector count. Its robust 316 stainless steel, powder-coated housing provides excellent resistance to corrosion, making it suitable for harsh and hazardous locations. Compact in design yet durable in construction, the detector measures 114 mm in diameter and 140 mm in length, with a solid 4.0 kg build for long-term reliability.

The FL500-H2 is specifically designed for hydrogen (H₂) fire detection. It can detect a hydrogen flame at distances of up to 60 ft (18 m) with a response time of less than 3 seconds, providing rapid warning in high-risk environments.

How does the FL500-H2 achieve reliable detection with low false alarms?

The detector uses a UV/IR sensing combination, monitoring ultraviolet wavelengths from 185-260 nm and infrared radiation at 2.95 microns. This dual-spectrum approach allows the FL500-H2 to accurately identify hydrogen flames while maintaining strong false alarm immunity against non-fire radiation sources.

The FL500-H2 provides a 0-20 mA analogue output with clearly defined current levels for fault, ready, UV, IR, and alarm states. It supports HART 7 communication and RS-485 Modbus RTU, allowing up to 128 devices (or 247 with repeaters) to be networked for system integration and diagnostics.
