The MSA Observer® i Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector  instantly detects pressurised gas leaks using advanced Gassonic® ultrasonic technology, making it ideal for situations where traditional gas detection is limited or ventilation dependent. Delivering an industry-leading detection range of up to 28 m, it reduces the number of detectors required while providing reliable performance even in complex outdoor pipeline systems, unaffected by wind, gas dilution, or plume direction.

Equipped with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technology, the Observer-i UGLD accurately distinguishes real gas leak noise from background sounds, minimising false alarms. It is fully operational immediately after installation, requires no in-field training, and can detect leaks from 2 BAR (29 psi), ensuring rapid identification of small leaks. The patented Senssonic™ self-test guarantees fail-safe operation, while its low-maintenance design allows simple one-person checks and calibration.

How does the MSA Observer® i Ultrasonic Gas Leak Detector work?

The MSA Observer® i detects the ultrasonic sound generated by pressurised gas leaks rather than measuring gas concentration. It uses Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technology for both background noise rejection and gas leak recognition. This allows the detector to distinguish between genuine gas leak acoustics and normal plant noise, significantly reducing false alarms in complex industrial environments.

What is the detection range of the MSA Observer® i?

The detection range depends on the selected mode and background noise levels, using methane at 0.1 kg/sec as a reference. In Enhanced Mode (ANN), the FQHI setting (59 dB sensitivity) can detect leaks up to 17 metres in ultra-high to medium noise environments, while the FQLO setting (54 dB sensitivity) can detect up to 28 metres in medium to low noise. In Classic Mode, detection ranges are 7 metres in ultra-high noise, 12 metres in high noise, 18 metres in medium noise, and 24 metres in low noise. The minimum detection limit is 40 dB with an accuracy of ±3 dB.

How quickly does the detector respond to a gas leak?

The MSA Observer® i has a response time of less than 1 second, effectively operating at the speed of sound. This makes it ideal for high-pressure gas systems where rapid leak detection is essential to minimise risk. The unit also performs an automatic self-test every 15 minutes to ensure continuous operational integrity.

Is the MSA Observer® i suitable for hazardous areas?

Yes. The detector is approved for use in hazardous areas and holds multiple international certifications, including ATEX and IECEx for Zone 1 and 2, FM and CSA approvals, SIL 3 certification under IEC 61508, as well as CE, UKEx, Inmetro, and SANS approvals. It is built with a 316L stainless steel housing and rated IP66 / Type 4X, allowing it to withstand harsh industrial environments. It operates in temperatures from –40°C to +60°C.

What are the power, output, and communication options?

The MSA Observer® i operates on 15–36 VDC, with a nominal current of 170 mA at 24 VDC. It provides 4–20 mA output in Classic Mode and 4–12 mA in ANN Mode, with 16 mA indicating a warning and 20 mA an alarm. Optional relay outputs are rated 8 A at 250 VAC. Communication is supported via HART 6.0 and Modbus, and the device can be integrated into control systems with DDL and DTM drivers.
