Description

MSA Senscient ELDS™ Open Path Gas Detector

This advanced open path gas detection system is designed to provide fast, reliable detection of a wide range of hazardous gases, including hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), sour gas (H₂S/CH₄), methane (CH₄), ethylene (C₂H₄), ammonia (NH₃), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and hydrogen chloride (HCl). Using gas-specific Harmonic Fingerprint technology, the system accurately identifies target gases while eliminating false alarms that can lead to unnecessary plant shutdowns. Its tuneable laser technology scans a narrow portion of the infrared spectrum, significantly reducing interference from water vapour, fog, rain, and snow, ensuring consistent performance even in challenging weather conditions.

This is one of the fastest responding open path gas detectors available. The integrated SimuGas automated function test performs and records daily checks without the need for manual intervention, helping to reduce maintenance time. Bluetooth wireless technology combined with SITE software simplifies commissioning, diagnostics, and event log retrieval, while eliminating the need for costly communication cables between transmitter and receiver.

FAQs
What gases can the Senscient ELDS™ Open Path Gas Detector detect?

The Senscient ELDS™ is capable of detecting a wide range of flammable and toxic gases, including methane (CH₄), ethylene (C₂H₄), ammonia (NH₃), carbon dioxide (CO₂), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), hydrogen chloride (HCl), and sour gas combinations (CH₄ + H₂S). Detection capability depends on configuration and application, making it suitable for both flammable (LEL-based) and toxic (ppm-based) gas monitoring in industrial environments.

What path lengths are available for open area and cross-duct applications?

The detector is available in two configurations:

  • Open Area Device: 5.0 to 200 metres (16.4 to 656 ft.)

  • Cross Duct Device: 0.5 to 5.0 metres (1.6 to 16.4 ft.)

How fast does the Senscient ELDS™ respond to gas leaks?

The ELDS™ offers extremely fast response times. In cross-duct applications, it can respond in under 1 second (T90). For flammable gases such as methane and ethylene, response time is under 3 seconds, while toxic gases respond in under 5 seconds.

Is the detector suitable for hazardous areas and harsh environments?

Yes. The Senscient ELDS™ is certified for hazardous areas with approvals including IEC, ATEX, UKCA, UL/CSA, and INMETRO. It also meets FM 6325 performance standards for methane detection. With IP66/67 environmental protection, 316L stainless steel enclosures and brackets, and an operating temperature range of -40°C to +60°C, it is built to perform reliably in extreme industrial conditions.

What installation and communication features does the system offer?

The transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) operate independently and do not require a communication cable between them, reducing installation costs. The system operates on 18–32 VDC and provides outputs including 4–20 mA with HART, Modbus RTU, and sub-4 mA fault signals for beam block and alarm conditions. Optical features include a Class 1 eye-safe laser (IEC 60825-1), heated condensation-free optics, up to 95% obscuration tolerance, and misalignment tolerances of ±0.5° (open area) and ±2.5° (cross duct), ensuring reliable performance even in challenging conditions.
