What is a portable gas detector?

A portable gas detector is a handheld/wearable device designed to monitor the breathing zone for hazardous gases.

What gases can a portable gas detector detect?

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), Carbon monoxide (CO), Oxygen (O₂), Combustible gases (LEL), Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), Ammonia (NH₃), Chlorine (Cl₂), Hydrogen (H₂) and many many more!

What is the difference between a single gas and a multi gas detector?

A single gas detector monitors one specific gas, such as H₂S or CO. A multi gas detector monitors multiple gases at the same time, typically four gases such as O₂, CO, H₂S and LEL.

When should I use a single gas detector?

A single gas detector should be used when there is a known and specific gas hazard present on site. They are ideal for personal monitoring in environments where one particular gas poses a threat, such as hydrogen sulphide (H₂S).

When should I use a multi-gas detector?

A multi gas detector should be used in environments where more than one atmospheric hazard may be present. They are commonly used in confined space entry, where oxygen depletion, toxic gases and combustible gases can all pose serious risks at the same time.

What is a PID gas detector?

A PID (Photoionisation Detector) gas detector is a specialised portable gas detector designed to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at very low concentrations, often measured in parts per million (ppm) or even parts per billion (ppb).

What is the difference between bump testing and calibration?

A bump test is a quick functional check where gas is applied to confirm the detector alarms correctly.

Calibration adjusts the sensor to ensure accurate readings against a known concentration of gas.

Are portable gas detectors ATEX certified?

Most portable gas detectors used in hazardous areas are ATEX certified for use in explosive atmospheres.

If you are working in a hazardous zone (Zone 0, 1 or 2), you must ensure the detector is appropriately certified.

What IP rating should a portable gas detector have?

IP65 offers protection against dust and water jets. IP67 offers protection against dust and temporary immersion. For outdoor environments, IP65 or higher is recommended.
