Butane is a highly flammable hydrocarbon gas with the chemical formula C₄H₁₀. It belongs to the alkane family and exists as two isomers: n-butane and isobutane. At room temperature and atmospheric pressure, butane is a colourless gas, although it is commonly stored and transported as a liquefied gas under pressure.

Butane is primarily obtained during natural gas processing and crude oil refining. It is a component of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), often blended with propane.

Exposure to high concentrations of butane can also pose health risks. It can displace oxygen, creating an asphyxiation hazard. Symptoms of exposure may include dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, and in extreme cases, loss of consciousness.
