Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is a highly toxic, colourless gas known for its characteristic “rotten egg” smell at low concentrations. It is produced naturally through the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Although it has a strong odour at very low levels, it quickly deadens the sense of smell at higher concentrations, making it especially dangerous because workers may not realise they are being exposed.

It is commonly found in the oil and gas industry. It is also present in wastewater treatment plants, sewers, biogas facilities, paper mills, tanneries, food processing sites, and agricultural settings such as slurry pits and manure storage areas.

At low concentrations it can irritate the eyes and respiratory system, causing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and coughing. At higher concentrations it can lead to rapid unconsciousness, respiratory failure, and can be fatal within minutes.
