Acetylene (C₂H₂) is a colourless, flammable gas with a faint garlic-like odour when pure. It is a hydrocarbon and one of the simplest alkynes, widely used in industrial applications due to its ability to produce an extremely hot flame when combined with oxygen.

Acetylene is most commonly produced through the reaction of calcium carbide with water or via hydrocarbon cracking processes in industrial settings.

It is extremely flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air across a wide concentration range. Unlike many other gases, acetylene can decompose explosively under high pressure or elevated temperatures, even without air.
