Introduction to bump testing

Bump testing is a quick functional check where a gas detector is exposed to a known concentration of gas to confirm that its sensors respond and its alarms activate. You should bump test because gas detectors can fail without obvious signs. Sensors can become blocked, poisoned, or drift over time. A bump test typically done before use or at the start of a shift, gives confidence that the detector will actually respond in a real exposure, helping prevent false reassurance.

The main difference between manual bump testing and using a bump test station is how the test is carried out. Manual bump testing involves the user applying gas directly from a cylinder using a regulator and cap, then visually checking that the detector responds and alarms. A bump test station automates the process.

What equipment is needed for a manual bump test?

Manual bump testing is a quick check to confirm that a gas detector is working properly by exposing it to a known concentration of test gas. During the test the user manually applies gas from a cylinder through a regulator and cap to the detector. It verifying that the sensors respond, readings increase, and alarms (audible, visual, or vibrating) activate as expected.

For a manual bump test, equipment needed includes:

What bump test stations are available?

All of the below bump test stations are designed to do the same core job ‘automate the bump testing and calibration of gas detectors to ensure they are working safely and reliably’.

In practice, they apply a controlled flow of test gas to a detector, check that the sensors respond correctly, and confirm that alarms activate as expected. Most of them go further by automating the entire process, meaning the user simply docks the detector and the station handles gas delivery, timing, pass/fail results, and data recording.
