What is a Refrigerant?

A refrigerant is a chemical substance used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Its role is to absorb heat from one area and release it elsewhere, allowing spaces, equipment or products to be cooled. Refrigerants are used in modern cooling systems across many industries. However, leaks can pose serious safety risks.

Refrigerants are designed to change state easily between a liquid and a gas at low temperatures, making them ideal for controlled cooling.

Common types include:

  • Fluorinated gases (such as HFCs and HFOs).
  • Natural refrigerants (such as ammonia, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons).

Each type has different performance, environmental and safety characteristics.

Where are Refrigerants found?

Refrigerants are present wherever cooling or temperature control is required. This includes cold storage facilities and freezer rooms, refrigeration plant rooms, air conditioning systems in commercial buildings, industrial chillers and process cooling systems, as well as supermarkets, food distribution centres, and data centres. Many of these systems operate under pressure and are often located in enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, which increases the risk in the event of a leak.

How do Refrigerants work?

The refrigeration cycle consists of four main stages. Evaporation occurs first, where the refrigerant absorbs heat from its surroundings and evaporates into a gas, creating the cooling effect. Next is compression, during which the gas is compressed, increasing its pressure and temperature. During condensation, the refrigerant releases the absorbed heat to the external environment and condenses back into a liquid. Finally, expansion reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, cooling it down before it returns to the evaporator to begin the cycle again.

How to detect Refrigerants?

Refrigerant detection is best achieved through fixed gas detection for continuous monitoring, supported by portable gas detectors for safety checks during maintenance.
