What is HART? (Fixed Gas Detection)

What Does HART Mean? (Fixed Gas Detection)

What is HART?

In fixed gas detection, HART stands for Highway Addressable Remote Transducer. It is a communication protocol that allows digital communication with field devices (like gas detectors) while still using the standard 4–20 mA analog signal for real-time process measurement.

How is HART used?

HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) works by superimposing digital signals on top of the standard 4–20 mA analog signal that gas detectors use to report gas concentration. This means the detector can simultaneously:

  1. Send real-time gas readings via the 4–20 mA signal.

  2. Communicate digital information such as device status, calibration data, and fault conditions over the same wiring.

This dual communication is possible because the HART protocol uses a high-frequency digital signal that rides “on top” of the analog current loop without interfering with it.

Benefits of using HART?

Using HART in fixed gas detection offers several key benefits. It allows technicians to remotely configure detectors, adjusting alarm levels or calibration settings without needing to access the device physically. HART also provides enhanced diagnostics, giving detailed information on sensor health, faults, and device status, which helps identify issues before they become serious.

By enabling seamless integration with PLCs, DCS, and SCADA systems, HART allows centralised monitoring and automated safety responses. Additionally, it supports data logging and trend analysis, making it easier to track gas levels over time and improve compliance reporting. Overall, HART helps reduce downtime and improve safety, ensuring reliable protection for personnel and processes.

Gas Detectors That Use HART

Crowcon XgardIQ Fixed Gas Detector

The Crowcon XgardIQ can support HART communication through optional modules, allowing the detector to provide enhanced monitoring and diagnostics alongside its standard 4–20 mA signal. This enables operators to remotely access information on sensor status, calibration, and fault conditions without needing to physically interact with the device. By integrating with control systems such as PLCs or SCADA, HART-equipped XgardIQ detectors help ensure centralised monitoring, improved safety, and more efficient maintenance.
